Using the Print Label Feature

Using the Print Label Feature

In the November 2017 update to EasyRx, we've added a new print label option.  This can be found on the view prescription screen for any Rx.

The print label option is designed to print a label that can be placed on plaster models or on a bag the plaster models are enclosed. The receiving lab can scan the bar code to open the prescription in EasyRx. This can be scanned with any universal barcode scanner! Our goal is to make the print label option somewhat printer agnostic, instead of requiring a specific printer make / model and software configuration. We wanted to make this available for the user to try out - so we're including in the update with a status of "beta".  We've successfully printed labels in our testing, but we're still determining the optimal settings.

Here are some notes:
  • Print Label has been tested on Dymo Plug N'Play Label Printers. It is intended to print a barcode with legible information about the patient, doctor and practice associated with the prescription.

  • The currently offered dimensions of the label are 2in x 1in
  • In order to get optimal print results, it has appeared necessary to adjust paper settings via the web browser or system print dialog. These may vary from printer to printer. There will be some trial and error to get the labels to print properly.
  • We recommend vinyl labels if you plan to stick the label on the model.  A standard label will not properly stick to the model.  A standard label is fine if you plan to place the label on the model bag

To print a label, click Print Labels from the View Rx screen
Choose your label printer from the list of installed printers on the computer
The additional printer settings can be found under "More Settings" in the Print dialogue window:

Continuous Printing

  • Settings that may produce an optimal print are whether the printer includes a paper option for Continuous that will cut off the printed label after content has finished.

  • If Continuous printing is not available, it may be necessary to set an absolute paper size of 2in x 1in to get the label printer to cut off at the desired point

Margins

  • Printers appear to vary considerably in their use of default or calculated margins. The Print label is intended to have the minimum amount of in-built margin to avoid content being cut out. However, this does not always fix the issue of excess margin being applied by the printer that effectively pushes content off the label.

You'll need to try different margin settings to determine the optimal margin setting

See your browser dialog or system dialog for the ability to adjust margins as needed
Your feedback is welcomed and appreciated as we try to optimize this feature to work with a wide range of printers.
